Timing Chain Tensioner and Chain Issues for 2.0t TSI VW and Audi Models

TSI Chain Tensioner Summary
We have extensively covered the issue around timing chain tensioner failure, but if you are not familiar here is a brief summary. TSI engines had an early revision timing chain tensioner that was updated. The early revisions were failure prone, and when failing the would allow the timing chain to loosen. This would alow the timing chain to jump, which causes the piston to contact the valves in turn bending them. This failure will require (at minimum) replacement of valve and or the cylinder head, which is a very large and expensive job. Â
Replacing your timing chain tensioner with an updated one will prevent the issue with the tensioner failing, which is why we put together the kits linked below. We have a video below that shows you how to check your vehicle. Â
TSI Chain Stretch
As the TSI engines get more age on them its become more clear that the chains on the engine may stretch over time. While we are aware of this issue its unclear how prevalent this is. There is an updated part number for the timing chains, which is likely due to the stretch issue. The great news is, its pretty easy to check if your timing chain is approaching or is already stretched too far. In the video linked below you can see these details on how to perform this check. Much like a bad tensioner if your chain stretches too far it will cause catastrophic failure leading to an expensive repair.Â

Comments
Is there a measurement spec for the camshaft chain? I have a 2010 Tiguan I'm getting into. This is my first time working on a 2.0. Looking for a measurement of allowable length chain can stretch. Or what a new chain measures in length. Thank you!
I'm a car engine mechanic new jitta 2018/2017 timing mark mark plz video dubai
HI Paul, Do you know what model year the updated chain design made it into production? Thanks!
