How to Perform a Differential Service on Your VW MK7 GTI Performance Pack

The VW MK7 Golf GTI’s optional Performance Package (PP) comes with a number of GoFast enhancements over the base GTI, including 10 extra horsepower, larger brakes, and a limited-slip differential (LSD). In essence, the MK7 GTI’s electronically-controlled LSD manages the amount of torque that is applied to each individual (front) wheel. In situations where one wheel needs to spin more or less than another wheel, it will determine the amount of torque needed to maintain traction. This helps reduce everything from wheel chirp during launches to understeer in the corners.

MK7 GTI Performance Pack differentials work via a Haldex pump out of the equivalent Haldex all-wheel drive system found in the VW Golf R. Like the drivetrain it’s named for, the Haldex pump needs to be serviced regularly for it to work properly.

How often should I service my MK7 GTI PP’s differential?

Volkswagen recommends servicing the Haldex pump every 3 years or 30,000 miles. For GTIs that are used more heavily (frequent track days, etc.),  this service should be done more often.
