5 Things All VW and Audi Enthusiast should know about being a part of the VAG community
- Be who you are
Often times new comers to the forums look to others for their approval on what mods are cool. Remember modding your vehicle is only for you. It’s your car and your hard earned money, spend it on what makes you happy. Everyone has their own taste when it comes to modding vehicles, if you do something that you love and no one else does who cares? Asking “Which wheels should I put on my car?” is like asking “Which jeans and sneaker combo is the coolest”. Maybe like the jeans, your wheel questions should be directed at your Mom, Wife, or Girlfriend.
If you don’t search first everyone will go nuts. The VW online community is a really great place. The people there are generally really helpful and have the same passion for the Volkswagen brand that you do. When you have a question and you are thinking of posting a thread to get some help, the first thing you must have already done is used the search in both the forum you are in, and google.
Why is this important? On the heavily trafficked sections there are many new comers, and understandably so they often have very similar questions.
When you post first and search later here are a few things that will happen. The first thing is there will be 5 threads that all ask the same question like “Which is the best intake?”. As said above the regulars on the forums are generally pretty helpful but they tend to get frustrated answer the same questions in 5 different threads. The second thing is people will flame you, this is extremely unproductive and may result in a thread being locked.
The moral of the story is search first. This will keep the helpful people continue to want to be helpful.
- Post Pictures
If you are asking a question that pictures might help explain better, you are not giving the helpers all the tools to help you. When you are talking about your car people will want to see what you are referring to. If you are not sure how to do so take a look HERE, the video is a little long but helpful. If you post threads without pictures you will likely get a comment“pictures or it didn’t happen”. This just a funny and sarcastic way for someone to tell you they want to see what you’re referring to so they can be a part of it.
- Be wary of trolls
The definition from Wikipedia “Troll - is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion”
The trolls will always be there starting trouble, looking for anyway to provoke you or others. Don’t engage them, It will be a frustrating exercise in futility. Go on your merry way and enjoy all the great info and comradery that is there for you.
- It’s like a cult
As VW and Audi enthusiasts we tend to be a little nuts, and most everyone you see has owned multiple VW's or Audi's. I tend to think that the exceptionally strong VW community helps keep everyone loving the brand, even when your check engine light is on.... again. With a die hard community second to none, you will likely be hooked for life.
