Usually bolted to the top on the Intake Air box on the Passenger side. The ignition control module is often the source of many misfire related issues on early VW 1.8t engines. This is a fairly simple thing to check. The first thing would be to check to be sure you have new high quality spark plugs. Often times low quality spark plugs like Autolite have a tendency to run poorly in Volkswagen engines. Once you have ruled out the possibility of spark plugs you can check the ignition coils.
You will need to know why cylinder is misfiring. We will use cylinder 1 as an example. If you have an issue with a misfire on cylinder 1. Take the ignition coil on cylinder 1 and swap it with number 2. If your misfire changes cylinders you know that the ignition coil is your problem. If it does not change then you likely have an issue with the ignition control module(for vehicles that have one)
