Saw this part in a thread about Pacific German's race GTI build, according to them as a vent/breather box is helps with, "Fluid vents out of the top vent cap on the front of the gear box. This will coat the gear box and driver's side suspension with DSG fluid."

Since it is standard on a Golf R's, but not GTIs I picked up one for my GTI for the potential long term benefits.
