The VW and Audi TPMS system has 4 sensors that communicate with the vehicle wirelessly.  Each tire pressure sensor has an internal battery which has a shelf life of around 7 years.  This time frame is 7 years of use time.  These OEM TPMS Sensors are not active when not on vehicle.  When you have once tire pressure sensor go bad on your VW or Audi, you should consider replacing all 4.  This is becuase once once TPMS Sensor goes bad the rest are not too far behind.  

Be sure to replace your TPMS Sensors with a quality OEM Sensor

 

Please note 2011.5 and later CC models do not use this sensor
