This is a genuine Volkswagen/Audi W5W wedge bulb (also known as a 194 series bulb) used in dozens of lighting applications throughout VW and Audi vehicles. From license plate lights and side markers to dome lights, map lights, glove box illumination, and instrument cluster lighting, this multi-purpose incandescent bulb handles interior and exterior functions where a small 12V wedge-base bulb is specified.
The long-life filament design extends service intervals compared to standard bulbs. Because these bulbs are used in so many locations and tend to fail around the same time, it's smart to replace them in pairs or keep spares on hand.
