MK7 (2015–2017) Golf R Ignition Coil Guide

What Do Ignition Coils Do?

The Golf R’s EA888 Gen 3 engine uses four ignition coils, one per cylinder. Each coil converts 12V from the battery into high-voltage spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture. These coils are mounted above the spark plugs for easy access.

How to Replace Ignition Coils on MK7 Golf R

Tools required:

• 10mm socket and ratchet
• 10mm flat wrench for coil ground eyelet
• Needle-nose pliers or a small wrench
• Ignition coil puller tool (recommended)

1. Remove the engine cover.
2. Loosen the ground eyelet using the 10mm flat wrench.
3. Unplug the coil connectors.
4. Pull the coils straight up. Use the puller tool if needed.
5. Install the new coils, reconnect everything, and reinstall the engine cover.
