What Do Ignition Coils Do?

The Golf R’s EA888 Gen 3 engine uses four ignition coils, one per cylinder. Each coil converts 12V from the battery into high-voltage spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture. These coils are mounted above the spark plugs for easy access.

Symptoms of a Failing Ignition Coil

Bad coils can cause drivability issues and damage other components like the catalytic converter. Watch for:

• Engine misfires, especially at idle or under load
• Flashing check engine light
• Rough idle or hesitation

How to Replace Ignition Coils on MK7 Golf R

Tools required:

• 10mm socket and ratchet
• 10mm flat wrench for coil ground eyelet
• Needle nose pliers or small wrench
• Ignition coil puller tool (recommended)

1. Remove engine cover
2. Loosen the ground eyelet using the 10mm flat wrench
3. Unplug coil connectors
4. Pull coils straight up. Use the puller tool if needed
5. Install new coils, reconnect, replace cover
