Everything You Need to Know About Lowering Your MK7 with Lowering Springs

Loading...

Lowering springs are simply shorter versions of stock suspension springs that lower the ride height of the vehicle. With a decreased ride height comes a lower center of gravity, increasing handling. Shorter springs also provide less suspension travel, reducing body roll and keeping the car more planted in the corners.

Lowering springs or coilovers- what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

Because performance springs just replace the stock springs in your MK7, they’re cheaper to buy and are plug and play aftermarket components that don’t require any other modifications to the vehicle. However, they are not adjustable and the aforementioned reduction in suspension travel means that the ride will be harsher depending on how much you lower car by. A stiffer suspension is fine on the race track, but isn’t ideal for the commuter GTI.

Coilovers are more expensive, but this is because they are more complicated components, consisting of both a coil spring and a shock absorber. The main advantage of coilovers is that many of them are adjustable, allowing you to easily alter the ride stiffness. Coilovers are more difficult to install however, as they replace more than just one part in the suspension.

NOTE: As the name suggests, Spring compressors keep springs compressed with extreme pressure. An improperly secured spring can suddenly fly out of the assembly at any point, which can cause injury or death. If you do not feel comfortable with your ability to safely use a spring compressor, please take your car to a professional shop to have your new springs installed instead of doing it yourself.
